EarthQuaker Devices Gary Automatic Pulse Width Modulation Fuzz and Dynamic Natural Overdrive Pedal

Gary Pedal boasts of a right brain that features a dynamic and destructive fuzz which is domineering and interactive. It is like a fuzzy tone with an envelope-controlled variable pulse width with sufficient volume to blow everything up. This fuzz turns the signal into a square wave and allows you to adjust the duty cycle with pick attack. The Yes control takes lead in deciding the sensitivity of the envelope. When this is fully down, you will get an unadulterated thick and heavy square wave fuzz tone that remains for days and goes dead quiet once you stop playing. As the Yes control is increased, the envelope becomes more interactive, and the pulse width narrows the harder you hit it. As you narrow down the pulse width, the tone becomes a noisy nasal, so narrow that Gary descends into the dark to disappear completely. With higher sensitivity settings, the sound disappears completely and comes cruising back to Gary’s big guy tone. With proper playing dynamics, this helps you to create a cool effect that sounds like an exploding amp. Gary’s left brain gives you a peek into his softer side - natural-sounding overdrive that keeps enlivens your tone and drives your amp crazy. This side is a reflection of the green channel of the Gray Channel - a classic little yellow overdrive. Lee has kept the clipping switch permanently set to the middle position, removing all the diodes from the circuit, producing a full-bodied, cutting opamp distortion with plenty of volume on tap.

The Go control gains control for the overdrive. Simply turn this up to increase the opamp gain to achieve a thick and full distortion. Turn it down and turn up That’s It control to use it as a clean boost. The That’s It contol acts as the master volume for the overdrive side. While the Left Footswitch is for Overdrive, the Right Footswitch is for Fuzz. Yes control sets the sensitivity for the envelope which controls the duty cycle for the square wave fuzz. This envelope is dependent on the level of the incoming signal, that is affected by gain pedals in front of Gary, pickup strength, source instrument, etc. Oosh control acts as a master volume for the fuzz side.
