As the immensely successful Plumes Small Signal Shredder exceeded EarthQuaker Devices' sales expectations, the company responded by introducing a tailored version for bass players – the EarthQuaker Devices Blumes Low Signal Shredder. This innovative pedal, the first designed specifically for bassists, also serves guitarists seeking deep overdrive, especially those exploring drop-tuned styles. Retaining the standout features of the Plumes, the Blumes incorporates a modified circuit with double the gain and a deeper bass response. Lower gain settings deliver the familiar crunchy tones, but beyond noon on the gain control, the Blumes diverges into a unique realm, distinctly characterized as "bass country." Operating on an all-analog tri-mode overdrive with soft clipping, it inherits the legacy of the classic screamer circuit while offering its own distinct voice. The bipolar power ensures enhanced dynamics, clarity, and ample headroom, resulting in a three-dimensional tone with added clarity that can drive a tube amp to its limits. Like the Plumes, the Blumes provides three clipping options, catering to a variety of low-end preferences.
Available Modes
In Mode 1, the Blumes employs symmetrical LED clipping, utilizing a pair of light-emitting diodes for its crunchiest setting. This mode offers a less compressed, more open signal with substantial output. Mode 2 introduces a clean OpAmp gain boost by eliminating soft clipping diodes, resulting in the loudest output with a full frequency response. When the Gain control is set below 11 o'clock, it functions as a clean boost. Mode 3 adopts an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement akin to the stock screamer but with increased output and clean clarity, providing a transparent tone. This mode delivers a warmer low-end response with lower output, presenting a fuzzier sound with half the output and the highest compression.
